Eyewitness: "Human Safari" underway in Ukraine as Russia uses drones to hunt; kill civilians
International war correspondent Zarina Zabrisky : "Russian drones hunt civilians, terrorize Kherson..."
(Share, like, and comment on this post to tell the world what is happening. You can help stop this genocide of the Ukrainian people by exposing the war crimes of the Russian drone operators targeting the residents of Kherson.)
She is an abject professional, the longest-embedded foreign journalist in Kherson Oblast, and one of the creative heroes behind the stunning war documentary Under Deadly Skies: Ukraine's Eastern Front, so when war-correspondent Zarina Zabrisky asked me to call her, I reached out immediately.
What ensued was a sobering discussion focused on the near-daily death and dismemberment of Ukrainian civilians at the hands of Russian war criminals across the city of Kherson.
During our call, she made clear one of her greatest frustrations related to the silence on the topic by her colleagues from large media who, in a race to cover other breaking stories across the frontlines, had seemingly ignored the genocide unfolding in Kherson, a genocide clear to all who had to live through the ongoing nightmare carried out on the orders of the Kremlin’s terrorist state leadership.
Looking at the mounting and indisputable, evidence coming out of Kherson, much of it due to Zarina’s unmatched reporting, I suggested that she allow me to reproduce in full a letter she sent to me after our conversation, one which laid the stark truth of this “Human Safari.”
(Zarina’s letter below contains a plethora of links, I recommend checking them out - SAC)
Dear Sarah,
In the past 30 days, Russian drones have launched over 3,300 attacks on civilians in the Kherson region, resulting in 7 deaths and 112 injuries, including 2 children and 5 rescuers. Nearly 50% of casualties are now drone-related, according to the head of the military administration.
The frequency of these attacks is escalating daily, with 30 to 40 strikes occurring each day, leading to multiple homes being burned down. Residents describe the ongoing assaults as a "human safari," as they are unable to leave their homes.
Over the last two months, Russian forces have employed a new tactic: systematically razing the Kherson region using kamikaze drones and drone drops, also known as skids.
Drone attacks in the Kherson region could be divided into two major categories by purpose: explosive-type discharges and incendiary-type discharges. FPV and Mavic drones are killing and injuring civilians by dropping explosives and banned anti-personnel mines. They also burn residential areas and critical infrastructure by deploying incendiary mixtures on houses, gas pipelines, and electric substations. This deliberate targeting of civilians constitutes a war crime under international law, yet it continues with minimal international scrutiny.
I am currently the only foreign journalist based in Kherson, southern Ukraine, and I have been extensively covering this crisis. My recent work includes the following:
